As reported earlier, former President Obama enacted the Global Magnitsky Act into U.S. law, which President Trump has now authorized it’s operation.
The act is a demonstration of the ever growing impact of human rights in the field of economic sanctions and export controls. As noted, the Act mandates that restrictions are imposed on persons implicated in massive human rights violations and significant acts of corruption – e.g. asset freezes and travel bans on people anywhere in the world. The act is an expansion of the original Magnitsky Act, which in principal only targeted Russian citizens.
In a published memo, President Trump has now authorized the Secretary of the Treasury, in coordination with the Secretary of State, to administer these sanctions.
