President Trump prepares Executive Order to audit and reduce U.S. Global Funding

On 25 January 2017, the New York Times reported that President Trump is preparing executive orders that would clear the way to reduce the U.S.’ role in the UN and other international organizations. Further, this review would begin a process to review and potentially abrogate certain forms of multilateral treaties. If President Trump goes ahead with the plans, this would not only be a radical departure of current U.S. global commitments, but also have serious implications for the ability of international organizations, especially the UN, to execute their important work in regard to international security.

U.S. Adds Five Russians to Magnitsky Sanctions, including close aide to President Putin

On 09 January 2017, the Obama Administration announced that it added five Russian nationals to the Magnitsky Sanctions list for human rights abuses. The move by the Obama Administration will further complicate how President-Elect Trump can ease tensions between Russia and the U.S. The most eye-catching designated individual is Aleksandr I. Bastrykin, an aide who directly reports to President Putin.
